Speed Demon wins Hot Rod Trophy #6
If you weren't following the news from Bonneville this year, the Speed Demon Racing Team won the Hot Rod Trophy for the 6th straight year. This was a significant milestone for several reasons. First, this was the debut of the completely redesigned and rebuilt Speed Demon Streamliner. It was also the first time Speedweek had been run in three years, after rain left the course covered in water for two straight years.
The video below is from one of the runs on Wednesday and will give you some idea of what it's like to go over 400 mph. This Speedweek allowed George to add several runs over 400mph - his total of 37 is more than anyone else in world.

ARP Shows HOT ROD How a Bolt is Made
HotRod.com
Brandan Gillogly on July 6, 2015
Automotive Racing Products, better known as ARP (http://arp-bolts.com/), has made a reputation in the automotive industry for producing high-strength, high-quality studs, bolts, nuts, and just about every other fastener one might need to assemble an engine. ARP has several facilities in and around Ventura, California, where spools of steel wire are cut, heated, hammered, and rolled to make fasteners that far exceed the typical Grade 8 bolt you’ll find at your local hardware store. In high-performance applications where engines and components are taxed far beyond what the factory ever had in mind, having a fastener that applies the proper clamping load becomes even more critical. Because of the company’s expertise, ARP is contracted to build fasteners for the most demanding motorsports in the world as well as aerospace applications. We toured a couple of its facilities to see the manufacturing process from raw material to packaging.

Closer Look at Goodwin Competition’s 1,700 HP, 650ci Marine Engine
EngineLabs.com
By Mike Magda, posted on Dec 22, 2014
Adapting an all-billet engine originally designed for dirt-slinging truck pullers to the high-dollar yet wet environment of powerboats provided a unique set of challenges to Goodwin Competition — mainly directing priorities away from massive power numbers toward more pump-gas-friendly manners and consistent reliability.
“It’s not meant to be a high-winding, high-strung engine,” says Evan Uerkwitz, an engine builder at Goodwin. “It originally was a clean-sheet design set up for large tractor pulling. We saw a niche in the market to change the product and use it...

Speed Demon Status Report
On the first run on the year on 9/12, Speed Demon got a little sideways and rolled several times near the 3-mile mark on the course. [This run was as part of what was supposed to be Mike Cook's Shootout, but was changed to a test and tune session with no official times due to standing water at the end of the long course and surface issues near the beginning.]
George walked away from the car and was taken by ambulance to Salt Lake City for observation. The data loggers showed the crash happened near 370 mph and the strength and integrity of the car/frame was simply amazing, given the forces the car saw during the crash. Everyone who participated in designing, fabricating and maintaining the car over the years can be proud of the fact that George walked away with only bumps and bruises.
George was grateful to everyone who has worked on the car over the years. The outpouring of support an concern was truly overwhelming. George is looking forward to bringing Speed Demon back to set new records in 2015.

Inside Blown Z’s Valvetrain With Jesel, Manton, PAC and Comp Cams
Dragzine.com
By Mike Magda, July 8, 2014
Increasing the engine’s usable rpm range is the fundamental direction that Late Model Engines followed to maximize horsepower for the 2014 season in a new supercharged 400ci LSX V8 built for Project Blown Z. As noted in a previous story covering the assembly, LME wanted to turn “more rpm than others in the class.” Quite simply, more rpm translates into more horsepower. With corresponding changes to gearing and shift points at the drag strip, more rpm also translates into quicker elapsed times and higher trap speeds.

Is Black the New 'Black' for Engine?
Engine Labs
by Jake Amatisto on May 5, 2014
[Check out this article on the trend toward block components for engine builds. We've had this trend covered for hears, since we provide most of our fastener kits in polished stainless steel and black oxide finishes.]
There was a time when chrome and billet were very common dress-up schemes for high-performance engines, but it seems these days more and more gearheads are choosing black over the classic shiny and polished look. Although chrome and billet engines look great when done right and meticulously maintained, adding black components to the engine is a trend that seems to be growing.

Blown Z: LME Assembles Super-stout 400ci LSX For New ProCharger
EngineLabs
Mike Magda, April 4, 2014
Building an efficient drag-race engine around boost requires a little more math and planning than one might expect. To start, the engine builder may have to work within boundries established by the rulebook. But the primary goal is to match the boost potential of the power adder — whether that’s a supercharger or turbocharger — to the engine.
When the team behind the Power Automedia project vehicle known as BlownZ mapped out an off-season rebuild agenda for both the chassis and powertrain, one primary goal was stepping up to a new ProCharger F1XR supercharger. Last year with driver James Lawrence, Blown Z won the NMCA West World Finals in 275 Drag Radial and finished third in the 2013 points chase. That engine was a 388ci LSX mated to a ProCharger F1X. Plans for the 2014 season call for improving on the team’s personal best run of 7.353 @ 190 mph and posing a consistent threat in NCMA Street Outlaw, PSCA Wild Street and WCHRA 275.
